Gary spent much of his career working for Illinois Power. He was a hardworking man, but he truly came alive when he was outdoors or surrounded by music. He loved hunting and fishing, was a big fan of Blues music, and for more than 35 years, he sang his heart out with his gospel group, The Sounds of Joy. Faith and community were cornerstones of his life. Over the years, he served on several boards and organizations, including the Festus City Council, Jefferson College Foundation, was President of the Jefferson County Rescue Mission, Concerned Parents, and the Missouri Black Chamber of Commerce. He believed in showing up and doing the work to make things better.
Gary was the first African American to attend and to graduate from St. Pius X in 1968 and later was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
On January 18, 1975, Gary married the love of his life, Lois Lynn Lucas, at Our Lady Catholic Church in Festus. Together, they built a beautiful life over 50 years and raised two sons who made him incredibly proud.
Gary leaves behind his wife, Lois Lynn Underwood of Festus; sons, Bryce (Melanie) Underwood and Jordan (Amber) Underwood, both of Festus; and his three adored grandchildren, Maliyah, Laila, and Mitchell Underwood. He's also survived by his sisters, Diane (Underwood) Selmon of Crystal City and Pamela Cook of Foley, Alabama; goddaughter, Macheal Cook; godson, Curtis Blanks, Jr.; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, relatives, and lifelong friends.
