Dean Terry

July 15, 1948 – December 17, 2017

How do I sum up 49 years with Dean Terry? It began when we were married August 23, 1968.  We had three children, Travis, Deana and Cody.

His love for horses began in his childhood so after working 20 years as a Pepsi Cola driver, he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a full time cutting horse trainer.  Along the way he had many tutors who helped him attain the skills necessary to accomplish this task.  As it turned out he managed to make a living and a name for himself all over the United States as well as in Germany.  One of his horses won The World, which was a very prestigious award.  He also sold many horses that were also winners which insured his place in the Quarter Horse world as a talented trainer.

One of his German customers, Rob Georg, wrote his first hit song about training with Dean titled “Push That Horn” which can be heard on Youtube.  Rob has continued to perform his country western songs and has become famous in Germany often included in the top ten songs on the Country Western charts.  His video version of the song includes videos of Dean yelling instructions to Rob during training sessions.  He was rough on his students, but they all still loved him.

Before he died Dean requested to be cremated and his ashes be scattered in the center of all the arenas where he showed his horses.  The Quarter Horse Journal got wind of this after one of the riders  saw his friend Pam Black kneeling in the center of an arena.  As a result they wrote an article about him with a picture of Pam crouching and spreading his ashes.  His request has been fulfilled as I spread the last of his ashes in the arena at our ranch where it all began.  Rest in peace, Deano!
