Colleges and Universities

203 Colleges and Universities in 26 States

For the 2017/2018 school year 73 colleges, universities, technical and military schools visited St. Pius and this is a very important part of the College Search Process.    However, I cannot emphasize enough personally visiting colleges early and often.  First of all, it is fun!  Second, though I admit is costs money to travel and visit these schools, it has several plusses.  The college selection decision should be a family experience.  Even the younger ones will benefit from going with you.  Drag them along.  It is a great bonding time for you and your young adult.  These trips will pay untold dividends for years to come.

You and she or he are making tremendous sacrifices and doing these trips together drives home these points.  Car trips to and from campuses are great times to process what this College Search Process is all about.  It is time and money very well spent.  Making the right college choice based on experiencing the place and investigating programs and having other schools to compare against help lead to a sound educational choice with lifelong consequences!  Yes, it is that important!

The following is the list of colleges and universities my family and I have visited.  Some my wife, also a College Counselor at Hillsboro High School, Vianney and now Cor Jesu Academy, and I attended or graduated from with a degree.  Some were with our daughter, Harper, who graduated from Hendrix in Conway, Arkansas with a Psychology degree. She has interned in DC, worked for Habitat for Humanity in Little Rock and Harper earned a Fellowship and studied in England for 6 months. After stints at Habitat at Little Rock and San Francisco, Harper is now the Director of Development for the St. Louis Habitat. Some colleges we have looked at for and with our son, Dylan.  Dylan has since graduated from Truman University with a degree in Communications and a Film Studies Minor (He changed majors four times and we were fine with that!).  He spent a junior semester studying abroad at Park Hill University just outside of Liverpool. This was a life changing experience for him! Truman is the only school he applied to because he and his parents were and are that confident Truman was the right “Fit.” Dylan visited eight schools. He is has worked at  Schlafly’s Tap Room, The Apple Store and Trader Joe’s and a Kickstarter funded start up. Currently at Trader Joes, he is now really into food science and especially urban farming and food issues. Some schools we visited just because they were relatively “on the way” to wherever we were going. My wife and I are college visit junkies – yes, we are addicted.

(*) Indicates schools visited with Dylan and our daughter, Harper, on their college searches for both undergraduate and graduate schools.  Of course many St. Pius students attend or have graduated from many of these schools and more will in the future!

Hendrix * My daughter graduated in May of 07 with a degree in psychology and spent six months in London on a Walker Fellowship, pursuing child advocacy policies in foreign countries.  She interned at the Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, VA helping search for runaway and kidnapped children. She had a fantastic four years at Hendrix in every respect! We visited six schools over ten trips, Hendrix and St. Mary’s three times each. As it is her education and her life, Harper then chose Hendrix. She was employed as the Volunteer Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity in Little Rock for three years. Several years ago I drove her to her new position in California (2,130 miles and ten more visited schools!).  She was recently a grant writer and community outreach something or other in San Francisco.  She lived in Oakland with my grandpuppy, Hubble.  Harper has since moved back to St. Louis and has worked at Disability Resources in Crystal City.  She resides in St. Louis and is back at this Habitat now with my next grandpuppy, Higgs – a part pit rescue.
